Couples Twittering for Education- Will and Elle Deyamport

Interview 3 of Couples Twittering for Education

When I first joined Twitter a little over a year ago there was talk of its demise. Several of my educator friends and family scoffed at the idea of educators collaborating through Twitter. However, there has been an amazing boom and growth of educators who have connected through Twitter. There are collaborating in exciting projects! There has even been a growth in couples who Twitter for education. I was happy to connect and interview one of the coolest couples on Twitter, Will and Elle Deyamport! We had a lot of laughs trying Wetoku, a free video interview tool, for the first time! We had some kinks like a few echos so I edited the video a little. You may have to turn the volume up. Even with the kinks, I think it went well.

One of these educators is Eric Sheninger, (@NMHS_Principal), the Principal of New Milford High School. We finally met at the 140 Conference in LA as part of the education panel. At this conference, I also met Melissa Sheninger, (@Pags21), who is an incredible educator herself. She joined Twitter shortly after the conference.

Couples Twittering for Education- Phil and Jo Hart

Part I of Couples Twittering for Education

In 2010, Twitter’s future seems uncertain. I am concerned with this news, because Twitter is my major source of communication and engagement with other educators. According to Bill Heil and Mikolaj Piskorski of the Harvard Business Review, a study showed that  10% of Twitter users accounted for over 90% of tweets. The article concluded that Twitter is more of a “one-way, one-to-many publishing service more than a two-way, peer-to-peer communication network.” However, I believe that educators are challenging these results and have made Twitter a strong tool for peer-to-peer communication.

Several of us are really passionate about Twitter that we have convinced our better halves to tweet with us!  I was really fascinated to see in my Twitter stream a few couples who tweet about education. I was fortunate that two couples I have grown close to and who are dear friends agreed to let me interview them about the ins and outs of tweeting as a couple.  This interview is the first of many interviews I will be doing with educators. I warn you now that I laughed quite a bit in the interview but did do many edits.

Interview Highlights:

  • Both have been tweeting for a little over a year.
  • They were inspired by Sue Waters to keep tweeting.
  • Both tweet from their desktops in the same room, desks back to back.
  • Yes they tweet each other, especially if they are exchanging information from work or need to remind each other of everyday to-do tasks, or to tweet each other links they want to share. They use it in place of e-mail.
  • They both have laughed at tweets from each other and and were sometimes irritated by tweets from each other.
  • They both agree Twitter is an effective way to debate, because people have to focus on structuring their arguments in 140 characters and this leaves room for both parties to get a word in. In real life debates, usually one person does the arguing and no one listens to the other person’s argument.
  • I liked this quote from Phil:

Twitter is being miss sold.

  • I liked this quote from Jo:

That’s one of the great things about Twitter that we all use it in our own way.

I had a great time interviewing Jo and Phil Hart. Next, you can look forward to my interview with Eric and Melissa Sheninger.

Equipping Schools with Tech: Interview with Eric Sheninger

Problem: How do we equip our schools with technology?

Technology is a part of our children’s lives and will be part of their future careers. However, one problem to integrating technology effectively into the curriculum is the lack of technology. Educators need innovative ideas on how to help their low-income students gain access to technology in order to even the playing field.

Ideas

In this respect, Eric Sheninger, the principal of New Milford High School, is a forerunner in the field. He is a principal who has discovered creative ways to equip his teachers and students with state of the art technology, such as a multimedia lab and mobile Ipod learning lab.

How did he accomplish this?

In my interview with Eric, he describes how he has come out in various media outlets, which have donated thousands to his school to fund the technology projects. These media outlets include pitching his school to a reality TV show, performing radio interviews, and guest starring in TV shows. If you are not keen on the idea of appearing in a TV show for your school, Eric suggests applying for grants and seizing opportunities you read about or at conferences you attend. These opportunities can be educational contests or asking companies to donate their technologies. Eric also suggests applying for grants.

Why aren’t we trying to get our innovative ways of using technology in the news?

I love that Eric and his school have been in the media quite a bit.  They have been featured in television news, mainstream television, newspapers, radio shows, etc. We hear so much negativity about schools that it is nice when innovative practices are shared. Let’s follow Eric’s example and begin to step outside our comfort zones by telling the news about our innovative practices.

If only all schools had principals as passionate as Eric Sheninger!

Are you curious about Eric’s television performances? You can take a peek here:

Create a committee to acquire a grant by next year to receive funding for technology in your school or try and get your school in the news!
