As an educator, you may find yourself frustrated by the fact that after three months of blissfully brainless summer, your students return to school nowhere near ready to resume their studies. In truth, the time off spells nothing so much as a loss of retained knowledge and an itch to relive their recent days of freedom. So what can you do, as a teacher, to encourage kids to keep learning over the summer? The best way is to introduce them to fun learning tools that speak to their techno-savvy generation (although you will almost certainly have to get their parents on board to ensure participation).

For starters, there are a lot of fun resources on the internet that offer educational games, reading, and activities for kids of all ages (and most of them are free). Hook your students up with websites like Kid’s Domain for crafts and outdoor activities, Funbrain for games, quizzes, and web books by subject and grade, DimensionM to teach math through multiplayer games, and Book Adventure, a site sponsored by Sylvan Learning Center that offers book lists for all reading levels and interests. Even NASA has a Kids’ Club with games and educational information. But these are just a few. You can find a lot more if you look around (from generic to those tailored for specific subjects or grade levels).

And you know that most kids are going to spend the summer texting, tweeting, or playing with one of a myriad of tech gadgets that they seem to pick up quicker than riding a bike these days. So why not find some fun activities that allow them to utilize these tools in an educational capacity? There are a few good learning games for traditional consoles and handhelds, like Brain Age for the Nintendo DS and DS Lite, which offers word and number puzzles, math problems, and memory tests, as well as Xbox Live Marketplace offerings like Brain Challenge (for older kids, this one has a multiplayer option) and Math Sniper 3D (to keep on top of the multiplication tables). But there are a lot more options for cell phones (updates of classics like Scrabble, Sudoku, and The Oregon Trail) as well as apps for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad (Math Magic, World Countries All-In-One, and Textropolis are just a few of the dozens of educational games to be found at Apple’s iTunes store).

Even better, suggest that your kids consider tech camp as an alternative to the more outdoorsy summer camps of old. Many states now offer tech-centric alternatives like cyber camps that match practical physics applications with computer software, discovery camps that explore the history of technology, and a wide variety of science camps. Kids who like media can also look into summer film or music programs, many of which now integrate computers and other tech devices for a generation of on-the-go kids. Whatever avenue sparks your students’ interest, they are sure to return after the long summer with a better prepared to ease back into the rigors of school.

———————————————————–

are just some examples of how students can creatively respond to a book.

Each link explains how the tools can be embedded into the curriculum and shows examples of how other people have used these sites to develop a book response. Some responses are better than others and it would be good to discuss with students beforehand what made certain examples better than others.

For some of the presentations, students may need a Flip camera (such as 60 second recap) however the rest of the presentations could use photos and images from the internet. A lesson on Creative Commons and Wikimedia before students are let loose would help them understand their responsibilities in terms of selecting appropriate images and music to use.

Once finished, students could show their presentations to each other and have them critique their work. Permissions allowing, presentations could also be uploaded to the school website or shown on parent information evenings or parent/teacher nights.

My challenge to you is to ask students to use one of these tools (can be in conjunction with a written response) in their next text response.

Do you think your students would be able to convey their understanding of a text better through a creative response?

Thankfully, as I was writing this post, I discovered Wordle is back in business.

What do we do when we are so passionate about a technology then it vanishes?

This has been my first real scare with a tool, but I have had a similar sense of loss with places (SIMS) I have visited in Second Life. They disappear and I miss them, because the reality is that some of these tools and places do not have options that are quite the same. In Second Life, it was a record shop where it always rained. The sound of flowing water soothes me and that is why I loved visiting this place. Yesterday, the tool was Wordle. Rumors tell me that in the future, this tool could be Twitter.

Technology continually changes…

With these changes, some technologies are replaced with newer versions. Some just disappear. Recently, Jeremy Harmer posted this question in his blog,

How should I face new technology? With enthusiasm or disdain?

Jeremy was saddened by a recount from his taxi driver of how he lost his newspaper job with the advances of the print industry. Read the rest of this great post for more of the story.

Embracing Technology with Enthusiasm

If you read this blog, you know I love technology and integrating technology into my curriculum. I love that it opens my students to the world. No matter what their English level, economic background, age, or cultural background, my students have the unique opportunity to display their work to a wider audience and they are motivated by this. I have seen shy students shine through technology. I have seen challenging students find their passions through technology. I have witnessed the English levels of my students increase substantially.

I will never face new technology with disdain, because technology has been advancing since the beginning of time. Humans are continuously finding ways to make life easier. However, I think people miss technologies. It is frustrating when you learn something then you have to learn another technology. I can imagine how difficult this was for people during the Industrial Revolution. History books have you believe that people were so thankful for technologies that completely revolutionized lifestyles. How about the television, fire, the wheel, electricity, and automobiles? I bet people struggled, especially when they could not afford these technologies. I remember when books were not available for everyone and reading was only taught to the elite. In former times, social divides were even larger and many people didn’t have access to new inventions. This has only slightly improved.

I realize I am also susceptible to feeling a sense of loss. This loss is not only for the technology, but I believe it is a sense that someday I may find that the world I was born in is completely different than the one I am leaving. The world will continue to keep changing and improving without me there to see it, embrace it, or experiment with it.

Right now, I embrace technology with enthusiasm but I still love to play the records on my record player on a rainy day.

Problem: How do we equip our schools with technology?

Technology is a part of our children’s lives and will be part of their future careers. However, one problem to integrating technology effectively into the curriculum is the lack of technology. Educators need innovative ideas on how to help their low-income students gain access to technology in order to even the playing field.

Ideas

In this respect, Eric Sheninger, the principal of New Milford High School, is a forerunner in the field. He is a principal who has discovered creative ways to equip his teachers and students with state of the art technology, such as a multimedia lab and mobile Ipod learning lab.

How did he accomplish this?

In my interview with Eric, he describes how he has come out in various media outlets, which have donated thousands to his school to fund the technology projects. These media outlets include pitching his school to a reality TV show, performing radio interviews, and guest starring in TV shows. If you are not keen on the idea of appearing in a TV show for your school, Eric suggests applying for grants and seizing opportunities you read about or at conferences you attend. These opportunities can be educational contests or asking companies to donate their technologies. Eric also suggests applying for grants.

Why aren’t we trying to get our innovative ways of using technology in the news?

I love that Eric and his school have been in the media quite a bit. They have been featured in television news, mainstream television, newspapers, radio shows, etc. We hear so much negativity about schools that it is nice when innovative practices are shared. Let’s follow Eric’s example and begin to step outside our comfort zones by telling the news about our innovative practices.

If only all schools had principals as passionate as Eric Sheninger!

Are you curious about Eric’s television performances? You can take a peek here:

Watch a recent news story highlighting how Eric and his school use Twitter for educational purposes!

Listen to audio clips from a radio show interview

Watch Eric’s TV performance on the show, Schooled.

Watch Eric’s interview on the Rachael Ray show for his part in the show, The Principal’s Office.

Read about Eric’s role in season one of The Principal’s Office.

Ask him about it on Twitter, @nmhs_principal.

Read his blog, A Principal’s Reflection.

Challenge:

In order to be cutting edge and stay relevant in any career field, you need a Personal Learning Network (PLN)! A PLN consists of individuals who you choose to take part in your professional development. These individuals share resources, exchange ideas with you, offer support, and collaborate with you. Twitter is one of the quickest ways to establish a PLN. However, many educators new to Twitter may not understand how the process works. In the beginning, I used to only update then I discovered how to engage with others in order to build a strong PLN.

If I only knew then what I know now…

You probably do not have the time to read all the Twitter materials available, but do you have 3 minutes and 20 seconds? In the PRESTO below, I share with you how I continue to build my PLN using Twitter.

What is a PRESTO?

PRESTO, PRESent your TOpic, is a video presentation style created by Heike Philp. In a PRESTO, the speaker creates a PowerPoint of 10 slides that auto-advance every 20 seconds, which means the entire presentation is only 3 minutes and 20 seconds long. You can do the PRESTO on any topic you wish and Heike will coach you through it in an online meeting platform. Creating a PRESTO with Heike really prepares you for video presentations. During the process, I learned about lighting, nonverbal communication, voice, pitch, and presence. Therefore, I recommend you read Heike Philp’s post for more information about PRESTO and how you can take part in this type of professional development.

The Rubber Room: Teachers Stuck in Limbo

I first heard about the “rubber room” from one of my favorite podcasts, This American Life. Check the link for a description of the story and to listen to the story. The rubber room is where teachers who get in trouble in New York school districts go. They may end up staying here for years and are not allowed to teach, but wait for a judgment. Deven Black, a blogger known for his heartfelt posts, mentions this.

As an educator, I often worry about dealing with students bureaucratically. What I dislike about the rubber room system is the feeling of hopelessness and abandonment. After giving so much to students, some educators will just be left in limbo under the wrong circumstances.

Shelly Blake-Plock urged his education students to start a conversation with this article detailing how Second Life saves lives. I would like to urge educators to begin the same conversation about using Second Life as a teaching tool and for professional development. This article exemplifies how Second Life has been used in health care issues. In the first example, the Children’s Memorial Hospital uses Second Life to train hospital employees to evacuate patients in emergency situations. Several drills are performed in the virtual world with various situations. The article explains how the virtual world was the best way for these drills in order to add realism and prevent the hospital from shutting down. These are just one of several examples of hospitals using Second Life to train employees. I have attended ISTE conferences in which I have seen how pre-med students are trained on Second Life.

In the second example, the article discusses how Virtual Ability, one of several peer support groups on Second Life, is able to provide emotional support and advice to 400 of the people that live on its islands who suffer severe physical, sensory, emotional, and mental disabilities. I know several educators still fail to see the potential of Second Life as a valuable tool due to bad experiences. However, I urge you to read the positive research about Second Life and give it another chance. To find out how to be oriented by a volunteer educator on Second Life, please read this previous post.

I believe that several educators can identify with learning how to teach from bad examples of teaching. Unfortunately, with the focus on standardized tests, several schools are approaching education with the theory that one type of learning fits all! Ironically, the results of these tests reveal that most students fail with this approach to education. You have to pay to read the entire article.
Cel Foster shared an incredible site she created for teacher professional development. Cel put a lot of work into the website and I recommend the website for all educators to share with fellow teachers. She has also included a terrific Glogster of various links and tools for topics, such as copyright information, tutorials, video links, and more!

Google Lit Trips

Paula White is an incredible resource of #edtech tools and links. She shared a link to Google Lit Trips which allows students to explore literature by traveling through the regions mentioned in a book using Google Earth. The website has trips listed for various grade levels and offers advice on integrating this technology into the classroom.

List of Videos for Learning

Giselda dos Santos shared a link that lists 40 video sites that are suitable for education. You may find some you did not know about!

Zoho

Zoho is a new edtech website I learned about this week. Martin Jorgensen shared the links with his preference for Google Docs. I love Google Docs as well, but Zoho is definitely worth a check! For more information on how to use Zoho with students, check out this great video tutorial that Jerry Swiatek created. You can use this video tutorial to teach your students to easily collaborate on presentations using Zoho!
