Learning new vocabulary can be quite daunting for most students. We just have to look at the literacy rates to see how much children struggle with vocabulary. Rote learning of vocabulary does not really work. Experience has taught me students remember what they use and explore. Students need to have fun, engage with the material, and explore how their new knowledge works. Vocabulary lists are boring, but word clouds can be quite engaging. Therefore, I am sharing my favorite ways to help your students begin to explore new vocabulary through various word cloud tools, tips, and resources.

Wordle

Wordle is one of the best ways to engage learners if you know how to use it well. The following links will help you:

Alternatives

• Tech Tools & Pedagogy– Word Clouds- Marisa Constantinides’ post includes a comparison chart that lists the options for each of the following word cloud tools and shows you visual examples of each.
• WordSift- clouds like Wordle with more options to sort words by frequency and alphabetically. Not as visually pleasing.
• Word Mosaic- great to make word clouds that fit a shape like a circle, exclamation mark, or heart. You can embed this. With Wordle you have to take a screenshot.
• Word it Out- similar to Wordle. You can embed this, change the cloud shape, and differentiate the font colors. This tool is easy to customize, but still I prefer Wordle.
• Tagul- make word clouds that fit a shape but each word becomes a link to a website.

A few more alternatives include:

• ABC ya!- Visually pleasing like Wordle. You can choose different fonts and font colors. You have to edit your text, because this catches all common words and symbols. You can get the most common words in your text, however, by using Vocab Grabber. I found out about this program from The Book Chook.
• Clusty Cloud Creator- Type in a topic and this generates a word cloud of its own. You do not get to choose the text, but the words are links to searches of the terms.
• Alpha Works- An IBM Java program that is supposed to be just like Wordle. You have to register with IBM, then download this. I believe this only works with PCs, because it did not work on my Mac. Here are the instructions, because getting the program is quite complicated, but may be worth the hassle if it works like Wordle.
• Tweet Cloud- make word clouds from your tweets or from topics and hashtags.

Resources

• Guess the Wordle- This wiki features several Wordles where students use their problem solving skills to guess the word or phrase. Have your students contribute and try to guess the other’s Wordle.
• This presentation by Tom Barrett shows 43 ways to use Wordle in the classroom:

Tips

• You can make phrases in Wordle by using the ~ to group words. Click here for an example of how I did this with the #PTChat question, Do~Kids~Get~Too~Much~Homework.
• Make specific words larger by simply repeating them.
• My favorite Wordle trick is to overlay a Wordle on an image. I found out how to do this through Tim Ryland’s post, Wordles of Character. Simply, have students open up PowerPoint then insert an image. Next, paste the screen shots they took of their Wordles. Open the Picture Palette tool box and select Set Transparent Color. Click on the solid background color of the Wordle. Finally, make the size adjustments.
• Below is what all these combined tricks looked like in a recent Wordle I did for #PTChat.

Tagul Tips

I use Tagul when I want to have each of the words in a cloud lead to a link with more information or to have them in a specific shape such as a heart, star, rectangle, or regular cloud. If a student has written a research paper, this may be a fun way to have them provide the links of several websites they discovered that lead to more information on a topic. You can also use this as a tag cloud for your blog like I did below. Go ahead click on any word and it will lead to one of my posts!

Two ways to customize links:

• By default, Tagul will have the clickable links lead to Google search results of each word. In order to customize the links to go to a specific blog, go to the Core Options tab and replace the Google search link with your blog’s search link and at the end add /$tag. For my blog the link I used was http://teacherbootcamp.edublogs.org/?s=$tag. I got this link by clicking on my search this blog box on my sidebar and pressing enter. Do this for your blog to get the search box link. You also can eliminate tags under the tag tab.
• You can also customize the link of each word to whatever website you choose. This takes a little more time since there are 300 different tags. You do this by clicking the API mode box in the Core Options category and playing with the code.

Challenge:

Don’t have students memorize word lists, instead have students use one of these tools or tips.

3rd wk of January edition of the What Did They Tweet weekly series!

This week many important events were tweeted about. Most notably, were tweets which focused on Haiti and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday. I love the power of social media to make the world aware of international disasters. Twitter has been an important tool in making people aware and spurring them to action.

Haiti in Pictures

Through my friend, @monk51295, I learned about this article, Haiti 6 Days Later, which reveals the dire situation in Haiti. The images are very powerful, which prompted Monika Hardy to respond, “Hard to take this in.”

MLK’s Influence

@Aleaness posted great reflections of Martin Lurther King, Jr. this week. In her blog, she posted this inspirational quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.,

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”

Ann Leaness also shared her incredible student project where her students voiced their opinions about what mattered to them. Below is her student video using a cool tool, Stupeflix. Her post, Wallwisher and Stupeflix in the Classroom, is definitely a must read! She has 2 WallWishers that accompany the project. Moreover, she tells you how she accomplished this much interaction with her students in 2 days.

The Death of Education, The Beginning of Learning

@Classroom_tech shared this thought-provoking video on why technology is needed in schools . I love the conversational tone of the video and the teacher interviews.

Haiku Song by 3rd Grade Girls

@Marisa_C shared this video, which shows a song written and performed by 3rd grade girls about female empowerment. The lyrics are a series of haiku’s. What an accomplishment!

As a little girl, I made Christmas gifts for my father. He preferred them over bought gifts. Well, at least until I can afford box seats for the Dallas Cowboys games. Making gifts can be difficult for children who have to beg a parent to buy them the materials and disguise this so one parent does not find out. However, web 2.0 tools have made this task a bit easier. If your children, students, or you still need to make some gifts for the holidays here are a few free websites to help!

Animoto

This video site has amazing multimedia tools and Christmas templates to help you make inspirational videos. You can sign up for a free educator account to access premium tools for your students, but you should do it now. It took a month for me to get my account. Here’s my video greeting for you!

Vimeo

I’ve made my family various Christmas videos throughout the years, but who can beat the quality of Vimeo. You can also embed videos on a website, blog, or wiki. Vimeo provides me most of the inspirational videos I include in this blog, because many of the videos come with a post detailing the story behind the video. The Chiarastella (bright star) video illustrates an Italian tradition told through the drawings and music of 22 eight-year-old students. A few days before Christmas the children go caroling with a star-shaped lantern and sing for money. The better they sing, the more money the children receive.

Twitter and the Backchannel

@vale24 shared this article, Conference Humiliation: They’re Tweeting Behind Your Back, which investigated the humiliation presenters faced when Tweckled, heckled by Twitterers. This article makes you think about the potential of Twitter as a backchannel in presentations. In many of the cases, the presenters suffered from technology malfunctions and suffered what the article terms a “virtual lynching.” What happened to netiquette and how far is too far?

Kid’s Digital Stories

@JohnMikulski’s students have created beautiful digital stories using Storybird. Storybird is one of my favorite applications that you can read about here! John describes the project which has students write a short story in which the protagonist discovers something he/she would have been better off not knowing. Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference

One extremely valuable part of Second Life is the various free conferences you get to attend. @barbsaka, an amazing educator who has attended several Second Life conferences, tweeted about the Virtual Worlds Best Practices in Education Conference taking place on March 12-13, 2010. Last year, over 3800 educators attended the event. Below is an example of what you can expect. If you feel comfortable with your Second Life skills, the conference is looking for volunteers, paper submissions, and presentation proposals. If you are new to Second Life, please join the SLife is Life ning where you will find educators like @barbsaka and me willing to show you around.

Student Cyberbullying Project

A great way to teach students about cyberbullying was tweeted by @technologytoday who had his students create a Wetpaint website dedicated to cyberbullying resources. The students displayed several powerful images and videos dedicated to stopping cyberbullying. Additionally, the students included a discussion forum!

Creating Phrases in Wordle & Screen Capture

Wordle is an amazing educational tool and @cheimi10 shared an incredible tip via Twitter. Read his post to find out how to create phrases in Wordle. I’ve included his video tutorial on how to screen capture the Wordle, because it is one of the best video tutorials I have seen!

A Quote for Educators

I’m adding my own tweet to the mix, because it included an image from Anne Hodgson’s presentation at the BESIG conference in Poland. I have included Anne’s slide which includes this quote by her co-author, Carole Eilerton, “Break a lesson into pebbles that the teaching and learning stream washes over and polishes.”

Cutting Edge Technology Wiki

David Kapuler has created an amazing wiki dedicated to various Web 2.0 technologies. The wiki provides information on various tools, such as nings, blogs, and PLNs (personal learning networks). Below is one of the resources I discovered on the website, a video about PLNs. My favorite part of the wiki is that David has included his 6 free e-books that are amazing resources of various technologies.

Google Image Swirl

Google does it again with Image Swirl, a search engine for locating various images. Below is an example of what the image results were for my favorite artist, Marc Chagall, but really you have to try it out. The search engine is easy to use and highly visual. For more information read David Kapuler’s review and Richard Byrne’s review.

100 Twitter Tools for Students

Accredited Online Colleges has created a list of 100 Twitter tutorials and tools. The resources are geared towards students but can easily be used by educators new to Twitter. Categories include finding people, research, study breaks, discussions, building relationships, careers, and more.

Elearning & Web 2.0 Tools

Mindomono is a new mindmapping tool that has incredible features, such as embedding, adding images, adding links, and more! My favorite is the E-learning and Web 2.0 Tools mindmap created by Jesper Isaksson.

Language Links Library

Find over 100 fantastic links for learning languages at the CALL4ALL website. Categories include lists of text to speech sites, language podcasts, language learning blogs, language learning software, and more! There are various finds for teachers and students learning English or any other language.

Kids Videos to Help the Environment

Getting children involved in solving world problems is always a fantastic idea! Therefore, I really enjoyed these infomercials by first graders who list ways to help the environment. I discovered these videos through Stacy Bodin, a wonderful sharer of resources. Below is one video, but I recommend you watch the rest of the videos by visiting @grade1′s website.

10 Ways to be an Inspirational Teacher

In this brilliant post, Terry Freedman, delineates 10 ways to be inspirational. These are what Terry suggests, please read his post for an explanation of each!

1. Throw out the syllabus, at least one lesson a week
2. If throwing out the syllabus for a day is too risky, then throw it out for 10 minutes
3. Use the pupils
4. Use a photo
5. Turn the tables
6. Work with other teachers
7. Invest time in reading
8. Definitely visit other schools to see what they’re up to
9. Go to conferences

Spoken Word Podcasts

Giselda dos Santos shared this link to Spoken Word podcasts. I am a proponent of podcast resources for learning, because a majority of students have Ipods. This makes this technology very accessible to a majority of our learners. Moreover, there are several free podcast resources available for education. Spoken Word is one of these databases that has a variety of podcasts, vodcasts (videos), and slidecasts available on various topics. I urge you to explore this website!

Video Games & Learning

Carl Dowse tweeted this slide show presentation, Video Games The Learning Revolution Tesol France, by Paul Maglione. One of the reasons I enjoyed this tweet so much was because I wasn’t able to make the presentation. I think gaming is growing as an accepted tool for learning. I have read various stances on the issue and think debate is warranted on the topic. Do you believe video games are useful learning tools? Look at Paul’s slide show and see if you feel any differently!

Stephen Fry’s Take on Social Media

Sue Lyon-Jones tweeted this post on Stephen Fry’s take on social media. Although Stephen Fry is an actor, I think he has a lot of insight on the new generation of students who will grow up with social media. Read the rest of the article to find out more and watch part two of the interview!

Videos to Bring Languages Alive

Ken Royal runs an incredible website which is updated daily with several interesting articles by various educators. In this piece, Isabelle Jones, shares advice on how to effectively use videos to motivate students to learn languages. Isabelle also lists many video search engines and video tools. Below is the video wall from one site mentioned, Blinkx, which is a highly visual search engine that allows students to view what world events are taking place in real time.

Skype an Author

Patrick Larkin is one of the most progressive principals I have met on Twitter. One way to motivate students to read is by allowing them to interview and speak with their favorite authors. This activity is possible if you follow Patrick’s link with instructions and a database to help you Skype an author in the classroom. Below is a video from the website that shows you a class’ interview with author, Mike Artell.

Online Safety Video for Students

During our #edchat discussion about teaching students how to make a positive digital footprint, Kyle Pace shared this video. In the video, a girl realizes that posting her picture on the Internet has consequences. This commercial could be used to spark a discussion with students on the implications of several online behaviors. This discussion should be a part of all schools!

The Iphone App that Makes a Difference

My Iphone is definitely helping me to stay on track of projects with the various apps that help me coordinate, organize, and collaborate. Now, my Iphone can help me make a difference. Neal Chambers shared this tweet about the Do Good app for the IPhone. Daily your Iphone will provide you with activities that several people are doing to make a difference for the day. One example has people using less water throughout the day.
